Jack Kenyon, NORML Summer ’24 Legal Intern

My decision to intern at NORML this summer is rooted in my desire to gain a deeper understanding of the legal process. As a rising second year law student, my professional ambitions extend beyond the conventional use of a J.D. degree; instead of using my education to work within the boundaries of the existing legal system, I aspire to change that system.

The cannabis industry is at a pivotal point in history, with laws and regulations evolving rapidly at the state and federal level. This dynamic environment provides a unique platform for me to better understand how legal changes are initiated, negotiated, and implemented.

Interning with NORML allows me to observe the complexities of policy advocacy while offering insight into the strategies and efforts required to influence legislation. From grassroots campaigning to negotiating with lawmakers, I am looking forward to engaging directly with the legal reform process. I hope to learn how to better navigate today’s political landscape, build coalitions, and effectively advocate for progress.

This internship also aligns with my long-term goal of contributing to meaningful legal reforms. It is my hope that this internship experience will equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career dedicated to advancing social justice. Ultimately, serving as a legal intern for the cannabis consumer lobby is more than a summer position; it is a stepping stone toward a future where I can use my legal expertise to affect change.

I enrolled in law school with the goal of helping people who might otherwise not be able to help themselves. My enthusiasm for crafting more informed, responsible cannabis policies – coupled with both my professional goal of helping others and my lifelong-love of details – is what drew me to this position. NORML’s organizational goals are very much aligned with my own life mission. I firmly believe that purpose and self-satisfaction rest at the intersection of passion, skill, and professionalism. I am thrilled that NORML is giving me the opportunity to explore this first-hand.
