Workers at Chicago-based PharmaCann’s cannabis cultivation facility in Dwight, Illinois, have voted to join Teamsters Local 777.
The Local 777 represents more than 100 PharmaCann employees throughout Illinois, according to a news release.
“We look forward to getting these (cultivation) workers a great union contract, just like we’ve already done for PharmaCann retail workers throughout the state,” Local 777 President Jim Glimco said in a statement.
According to data from Cannabiz Media, Illinois has had the most successful unionization campaigns for U.S. marijuana companies with more than 50 – twice as many votes as in California, which holds the No. 2 spot.
Meanwhile, more than 120 Ayr Wellness marijuana retail and delivery workers in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, voted to ratify their first union contract through United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 711.
The employees of Miami-based Ayr staff three cannabis retail stores and a delivery depot.
“We fought for fair wages, safe conditions and respect,” said Chase Payne, an Ayr Wellness budtender from the Las Vegas Eastern Avenue location, according to a UFCW blog post.
While labor unions including UFCW and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters continue to grow membership in the marijuana industry, a small but growing number of unionized cannabis workers have voted to decertify, or revoke, their union membership.
