The White House’s 2026 fiscal year budget request calls for the repeal of a long-standing federal budget rider that prohibits the Justice Department from using taxpayer dollars to prosecute patients and others involved in the state-legal medical cannabis industry.
The provision, which has been in place since 2014, protects patients, caregivers, and medical cannabis providers in the 39 states that have legalized medical access from federal interference or criminal prosecution. Prior to the passage of this protection, federal prosecutors routinely took actions against patients and dispensaries in legal states.
Despite his Administration’s demand, the decision to either include or repeal this language rests solely with Congress. Sign on to our letter telling your lawmakers to maintain these important federal protections for patients.
While there are plenty of hired guns on Capitol Hill working to keep locking people up for marijuana or to make a buck off of cannabis consumers, NORML is there lobbying to end federal cannabis prohibition and protect your rights. That’s why we need your help now more than ever.
