Ohio recreational cannabis retailers recorded $242.2 million in sales in 2024 – only five months after the state launched its adult-use market.

The state’s adult-use operators sold 4 million-plus units of manufactured products and 32,487 pounds of plant material sold through Dec. 28, the Ohio Capital Journal reported, citing data from the Department of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control.

Ohio has 124 dual-use marijuana stores that can sell both medical and recreational marijuana.

Moratoriums banning the sale of adult-use products were in place in more than 120 Ohio municipalities as of Dec. 19, according to data from Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law.

Meanwhile, Ohio’s 136th General Assembly, which returns this week, is expected to introduce legislation governing marijuana and hemp, the Capital Journal reported.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine wants lawmakers to ban or regulate delta-8 THC products, which are made from hemp and have 0.3% of THC or less – especially since the state has no age limits for purchasing delta-8 products.

The previous General Assembly shot down a Senate bill that would have banned the sale of intoxicating hemp products in Ohio, Crain’s Cleveland Business reported.

The state’s incoming House speaker, Matt Huffman, backed the Senate’s proposed changes, the Capital Journal reported, so hope exists the new General Assembly will revise the marijuana law.
