Massachusetts renewed its contract with cannabis seed-to-sale software provider Metrc, an agreement the parties have had since the state’s first adult-use stores opened in 2018.
Licensed operators can use Metrc’s radio frequency identification (RFID) and software-as-a-service (SaaS) systems to track marijuana products at every stage and communicate that information to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.
In a Wednesday news release announcing the contract renewal, Metrc CEO Michael Johnson said the Lakeland, Florida-based company “… will continue to support the core efforts of the commission, ensuring that we are the best regulatory partner in safeguarding public health and safety.
The extended contract will give Massachusetts marijuana operators access to Metrc’s newly launched Retail ID platform.
Retail ID offers businesses the ability to generate QR codes to identify products and allows consumers to scan and access product information, such as lab results and product origin, with their smartphones.
Retail ID also cuts waste, Metrc said, because product information is available through the QR code, meaning secondary labeling is no longer necessary.
Having contracted with 29 states that have licensed marijuana programs, Metrc serves 500,000-plus businesses, according to the release.
